Hedge set for Sandown

The Porsche Carrera Cup Australia championship returns this weekend at Sandown International Raceway, in the outer suburbs of Melbourne.

For the first time since joining the Carrera Cup championship, Callum Hedge enters the race weekend as the championship leader.

“It’s an interesting feeling." said Hedge.

“For the last 2 years, I’ve had to be chasing down other competitors, but now I feel like I’m being chased! My game plans haven’t changed at all and I’m still heading out there to win as many races as I can.”

The 19-year old is fond of the Sandown circuit, as it reminds him of his favourite NZ track - Pukekohe Park, which recently shut down.

“It’s really bumpy, with big curbs, and has a horse track in the middle. It’s basically Pukekohe, but in Australia. Last year, we were caught in the mid-pack after missing the mark in quali, but I’m aiming to continue my 2023 qualifying form, and be able to battle up the front.”

Two weeks out from the Sandown event, the Earl Bamber Motorsport team tested at the Sandown circuit, which was a valuable learning experience for the kiwi teenager.

“The test day was an awesome opportunity to get behind the wheel of my Team Porsche New Zealand Porsche, and try out a few things that we’ve been working. Plus, I got to try some different lines and really test the limits. We made some great progress, and I’m really hoping that translates into some good speed for Round 5.”

Callum has also embraced some time at home (Auckland NZ), in between rounds, with the Formula Regional Americas series in a mid-season break.

“Not jumping on a plane to America before or after a Carrera Cup round has been a nice change. While I’m loving the racing I’m doing in America, I’ve really enjoyed just being able to hang around home for a while, and I’ve actually been doing a lot of driver training at Hampton Downs.” said Hedge,

“I even got to drive a Renault RS01 GT which was really cool. And other than that, I’ve just been in the gym, continuing to work on my fitness, and physical preparation. I’m feeling really good heading into this weekend at Sandown.

Callum Hedge will be on track for practice at Sandown on Friday, and you can find the event schedule here.
