Hedge consistent at SMP - Round 2
Race Report for Round 2 of the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge held at Sydney Motorsport Park, 30th April – 2nd May 2021
A NEW challenge was thrown into the mix at Sydney Motorsport Park for Round 2 of the Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, it being qualifying under the venue’s new lighting set-up.
Hoping to add a second victory following a debut success at Phillip Island’s opening round, Callum Hedge made a strong start to the weekend by qualifying behind experienced pair Ryan Suhle and Christian Pancione.
The opening race was highlighted by the battle for second between Suhle and Hedge as the category rookie put the pressure on. However, the experience of Suhle shone through as Hedge settled for third.
Unlike at Phillip Island, the 45-minute endurance race acted as Race 2 where Hedge held onto leaders Pancione and Suhle early, but continued his consistency run in third ahead of Hall.
In the 10-lap final, Hedge dropped position to Hall at the start, but took back the position the next time around at Turn 1 as he mounted an attack on Suhle, but maintained third, which gave him the final step of podium for the round.
“I am really happy with my results in Sydney,” Hedge said. “Earl Bamber Motorsport improved the Porsche throughout the weekend and to finish on the podium is just reward.”
Hedge is third in the overall standings ahead of the rescheduled Morgan Park (Warwick, QLD) event on August 13-15.
